The Wall

The Wall is one extended family's favourite smells, each hung on a separate luggage tag. The family comprises four generations of a Jewish family, their ages ranging from Aaron, aged 85, down to Amy, aged 1. The smells are as evocative as prayers, and so the tags have echoes of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem as well as the unclaimed luggage of the Holocaust. The urban nature of this family is in the fire escape, while piled pebbles and barbed wire are reminders of the past.

The family are:
Alfie and Martha, a middleaged couple married for 30 years.  Zelda, Martha's mother; Aaron, Alfie's father; Martha's Aunt Rachel; and Alfie's Cousin Joe.
Alfie and Martha's children Becky, Sam and Lizzie and their spouses David and Rebecca. Lizzie is unmarried.   And the grandchildren Emily, Josh and Amy.
